DESI Gaon Safai Centre (Village Hygiene Centre)

The Safai Centre provides latrines and shower rooms to families from Baharwari who do not have latrines or bathrooms at home. The families keep the keys to their own rooms and share them sparingly if at all with others. A few years ago a grant was given to Decentralised Energy Systems (India) Pvt. Ltd., to run a modern biogas plant using a bag system. It was installed with the hope of providing cooking gas to nearby houses. It was dismantled this year. There are several reasons the project operators were not able to hand it over to users successfully. They could not get together enough cow dung, the gas pipes kept filling with condensation water and the gas choked, and there were not enough users for the gas. A fatal combination.  A discussion is under way as to whether to take up biogas projects again. Perhaps it might be better use the tried and tested Deenbandhu biogas plant model. Or it may be better to have strict management structures in place before venturing into the field of supplying cooking gas again. Today this centre in the middle of the village is gradually being repurposed. The biogas pit is used for walking cat fish fingerlings. There is a pond for the bigger fish next to it. The Mango trees provide shade, there is a water pump for the various water needs at the centre. The site is prone to flooding.
