DESI Power Foundation was established as a Trust by Dr. H. N. Sharan in 2006 to support integrated rural development driven by decentralised renewable energy generated electricity for local value addition and job creation. Lack of skilled manpower has always been a major bottleneck in rural development and the initial focus of DESI Power Foundation was to set up DESI MANTRA Training Centre at Araria and train local people, including women, for all levels in village projects and in other local activities.
Many people have profited from its program. But after 20 years, it is clear that nutritional, health and social conditions of villagers are still at abysmally low levels and several inputs other than electricity are just as critical. DESI Power Foundation has therefore started pilot projects covering energy services, food, nutrition and hygiene, specially for poorer farmers and landless laborers. Such projects require suitable local management, financing and ownership structures. Pilot projects described here will help in finding workable solutions for their large scale replication.
